The C3 Latin Handbook has many answers to your Latin & Greek questions - Click here
Latin and Greek Opportunities at C3 are numerous. Depending on your level of interest, choose one of these exciting opportunities
Classical Enrichment (CE):
We believe a classical education should provide opportunities for all students to learn about the cultures, customs, history and language of the ancient Greeks and Romans. On the 2nd Thursday of most months, C3 offers CE programs from 2:00 to 3:00 pm. These programs focus on various aspects of the Classics – and all students are invited to participate. Each month offers an exciting opportunity to learn and participate and everyone is encouraged and welcome. The CE Schedule will be posted on the C3 Calendar.
Junior Classical League:
Our upper level Latin students are automatically enrolled in both the National Junior Classical League and the Virginia Junior Classical League when they register for Latin. The VJCL is the state organization which promotes and organizes all things Latin. One of the most important events is the VJCL State Convention, traditionally held at the Richmond Convention Center on the Sunday and Monday just before Thanksgiving. All Latin students except Latin 1/3 students may participate in this event. The NJCL is the organization responsible for promoting the Classics at the national level. One of the highlights for those Latin students in grades 7 and up is the opportunity to participate in the National Junior Classical League Convention. This event occurs one week every summer (usually in late July) and the location moves to a different college campus each year. The national convention is similar to the state convention, but it lasts a week. Students will receive information on these conventions from their Latin teachers at the appropriate time. Additionally, throughout the year, other Latin and Greek related opportunities may be offered to our students via the JCL.
VJCL’s Competitive Certamen:
C3 also participates in a Latin quiz-bowl type team competition called Certamen. Certamen categories include Latin grammar, history, mythology, and life & culture. The competitions are generally held once a month, on a Saturday, and rotate among various schools typically in the Northern VA area. All students in Latin ½ or 2/3 and higher are eligible to play and teams are organized based on the student’s Latin academic level. Teams typically practice after classes on Thursdays, but additional individual work is expected. The VJCL website has detailed information about Certamen schedules.
Optional Extra Exams
Our students also have multiple opportunities throughout both the fall and spring semesters to take various tests, both on-line and in person. C3’s testing coordinator communicates testing schedules, syllabi, and study resources and also registers our students for these tests. The ASW will contain information for students and parents as they consider taking one, two, or many of these exams. Latin teachers are familiar with the tests and can also provide answers to questions and information regarding all tests. The following is a list of possible tests being offered each year but it is not exhaustive:
Memory Period:
Memory Period is held three Thursday mornings each month. It is a “must try” opportunity for younger students who are not even in Latin or Greek yet. It is a student lead session of chanting Latin charts – nouns and verb endings, pronouns, body parts, and prayers. Memorizing these charts provides invaluable skills for upper school Latin success.
For extra practice at home, you can access a recording on our Classical Department website. The link to this website is found on the homepage. Get the password for the Classical Department website from your Latin teacher.
